What is Variograma JiraChrono?
A lightweight desktop app for Jira users who want accurate time records without the hassle.
Native application
Runs directly on Windows or macOS — no browser, no extensions, no third-party dependencies.
Built-in timer
Start, pause and stop time blocks with a single click. The timer stays visible in the taskbar.
Automatic worklogs
When a block ends, the worklog is submitted directly to the chosen Jira issue via the API.
Local security
Access tokens never leave your computer. Stored in Windows Credential Manager or macOS Keychain.
Key features
Atlassian OAuth authentication
Secure connection to your Atlassian account via OAuth 2.0 with PKCE. Your password is never requested directly.
Issue search
Search Jira issues directly inside the app without opening a browser.
Idle detection
The app detects when your computer has been idle and suggests adjusting the logged time.
Worklog history
Review worklogs submitted in the current session, with start time, duration and associated issue.
Multilingual
Interface available in English, Portuguese and Spanish.
Auto-start
Optionally configure the app to launch at system startup.
AI token usage tracking
Monitor GitHub Copilot token consumption per model in real time by listening to VS Code telemetry via OpenTelemetry — no plugins needed.
From purchase to your first worklog
The app has two parts: a Jira integration activated on the Atlassian Marketplace and a desktop client installed on your PC or Mac. Here is how they come together.
Open the Marketplace listing
Go to the Variograma JiraChrono listing on the Atlassian Marketplace. You need to be a Jira site administrator.
Try or buy
Start a free trial or purchase a licence. Atlassian handles billing securely. The app is compatible with Jira Software and Jira Service Management (Cloud).
Install & allow
Click Install on the Marketplace page. Atlassian deploys the integration to your Jira instance automatically. No servers or infrastructure to manage.
Download the desktop app
Install Variograma JiraChrono from the
Microsoft
Store
(Windows 10/11) or download the .app bundle for macOS.
No administrator rights required.
Sign in with Atlassian
On first launch, click Connect to Jira. A browser window opens to Atlassian's own login page. Your password is never seen or stored by the app — only a short-lived OAuth 2.0 token is kept, secured by the OS credential store.
Pick a Jira issue
Type part of the issue key or title in the search box. The app queries your Jira directly and shows matching issues across all projects you have access to.
Start → Stop → Done
Hit Start. Work. Hit Stop. The worklog is submitted automatically to the selected Jira issue — with the exact duration, start time and an optional comment.
The Marketplace installation is a one-time step performed by your Jira admin. Once done, every member of the team can install the desktop app and connect independently — no further admin action is needed per user.
AI Token Usage Tracking
VRJiraChrono can capture GitHub Copilot token usage from VS Code in real time — broken down by model and session, without any additional plugins.
Enable the listener
In the app, open Settings, toggle AI Token Counter on, and set the port (default: 4318). Use the Copy to clipboard button to get a ready-to-paste snippet.
Configure VS Code
Open settings.json in VS Code (Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+P → Open User Settings
JSON) and add:
"github.copilot.chat.otel.enabled": true,
"github.copilot.chat.otel.exporterType": "otlp-http",
"github.copilot.chat.otel.otlpEndpoint": "http://localhost:4318"
Replace 4318 if you
configured a different port in the app.
Use Copilot normally
Token data from each chat interaction is captured automatically and displayed in the app, including which model was used (e.g. GPT-4o, Claude Sonnet).
Security & privacy
Your data belongs to you. The app is designed to function without relying on any external services.
Tokens secured by the OS
OAuth tokens are stored in the Windows Credential Manager / DPAPI or the macOS Keychain — never in plain-text files.
No intermediate server
This website does not store tokens, worklogs or personal data. The OAuth code-for-token exchange happens in the desktop app, not on this server.
Direct communication
The app talks directly to the official Atlassian Jira API. There are no Variograma proxy servers in between.
